The power of leisure: why taking a break matters
Let’s talk about leisure – that magical thing we all wish we had more of, yet sometimes feel guilty about actually enjoying. As women, we often juggle work, ministry, relationships, careers, family time, responsibilities, and let’s not forget-staying spiritually grounded. With all of these, leisure can seem like a luxury. But what if I told you it’s actually a necessity?
Wait… Is leisure even a biblical thing? Is it legit?
Absolutely! God Himself set the example for us when He rested on the seventh day. Jesus also took time to withdraw from the crowds, pray, and recharge. If the Creator of the universe and the Saviour of the world made time for rest, who are we to act like we don’t need it?
Leisure isn’t just rest – it is refreshment.
Let’s be real; some of us think of leisure as scrolling endlessly on social media, chatting on threads, watching Tiktok videos, IG reels or watching ten episodes of a show we don’t even like that much. While there’s nothing wrong with a little entertainment every once in a while, true leisure is intentional and it should leave us feeling refreshed, not drained.
I am going to list a few ways you can make your times of leisure more meaningful:
Through creative outlets: worship through fun
Do you love painting, writing, singing, dancing, or playing an instrument? Off the top of my head, I can think of two of my friends, Ure & Ochuko – both thriving medical doctors, who love salsa. In between their service to God and humanity, you’ll often find them going across borders for salsa socials/festivals. Talk about being intentional about your leisure! Using your God-given talents for joy – without pressure – can be a form of worship. Sometimes, the best way to connect with God is to engage in creativity for the sheer joy of it!
Nature walks: reset and reflect
Nothing clears the mind like fresh air. Walking in nature (without rushing or having anywhere in particular you’re aiming to go to) gives you space to breathe, pray, and process life. Bonus points if you leave your phone behind 😊
Books that feed your soul
Not every book has to be deep theology. Find a fiction novel, a Christian devotional, or even a good biography that excites you. There’s something beautiful about letting your mind wander through a story.
Quality time with people who uplift you
Leisure doesn’t always mean being alone. Sometimes, laughing over ice cream with friends or having a heart-to-heart over coffee is the best way to refresh your spirit. I remember the day I and some of my high school friends went out to eat and just laugh. Our throats were hoarse from the laughter. For the hours we spent together, we were under 15s again, without any bills to pay or any children to tend. We just ate, picked at each other’s plates and had a great time laughing and talking about everything and nothing.
The art of doing nothing
Yes, you read that right. Sometimes, just sitting in silence, enjoying your favourite snack (without stressing about calories – I said what I said 😊), or lying on the bed listening to good music is exactly what your spirit, soul and body need. We don’t always have to be doing something – sometimes, we just need to be.
Leisure is a gift, so enjoy it!
Ultimately, leisure isn’t about escaping your responsibilities – it is about recharging for them! A well-rested woman is a joyful, effective, and spiritually strong woman. So, please go ahead, take that break, and enjoy the moments of leisure God has given you.
And if anyone asks you, “What are you doing?”
Tell them you’re following the example of Jesus because even He took time to rest. 😉
Have a blessed week!
